Work order assignments and costs

Assignment and cost items help identify where resources are allocated and where the money is spent.

Example: A new fire hydrant is to be installed in a new subdivision. A work order is generated for the installation. It includes the assignments or costs of relevant human resources (contractor) and assets (fire hydrant and tools). The cost of a new fire hydrant is $5000 and the hourly rate for a contractor to install the fire hydrant is $40/hr. The tools needed to install the fire hydrant cost $300. The combination of these assignments and costs results in the total job cost for the work order.

Note: Depending on the number and type of assets associated with a work order, you can distribute the total cost of a work order by asset count, asset size, asset type, or manual allocation. For information on work order cost distribution, see Work order cost distribution.
